Uxa foundry in Brno-Komarov was founded in 1886 in what was then a suburb of the city of Brno by brothers named Uxa as a supply of the rapidly growing textile industry in Brno. Uxa foundry was laying barely half a kilometer from several small textile factories, which were formed at the confluence of the Svratka and Svitava millraces near the streets Přízová, Mlýnská, Spálená and Dornych and later gave rise to the giant complex of Vlněna factory. The construction of the foundry has contributed significantly to a conversion of Komárov originally lying in a swampy area under the city laced with rivers, canals and millraces (called the Venice of Brno), which started becoming a factory district.

The original production ranged between various castings from gray and malleable cast iron for the textile industry, including chains (except of pin chains with steel pins, the foundry also produced special Ewart disconnectable chains). No significant change happened in the production of the foundry until the end of the 40s of the 20th century, when the company reached a number of 700 employees. Thanks to this, on the basis of Law 114/1948 of 28 April 1948 the foundry was nationalized in 1949 and later renamed to the Juran factory according to a founder, resistance fighter and first communist deputy Josef Juran (later ZTS). The production switched to hydraulic components (switchgear, valves, etc.), oil burners and components for the defense industry in the period of socialism .

In 1993, the foundry was privatized under the name UXA, s.r.o. (ltd.) and in 2008, 60% share of the foundry was sold to an Italian company IUMEX SpA, which continues to produce and export mainly to Western Europe.

Description

The foundry is located between the streets Kovářská, Dornych, Široká and Plotní in Brno, the Komárov district on an area of approximately 1 ha occupying most of the block, which it shares with several porch houses where local workers lived formerly. The dominant feature is a pair of brick chimneys of a height of approximately 35 m, which can be seen virtually from the entire Komárov district. In 2014, the foundry was in operation.
